Medical and environmental experts have revealed that the Olympic athletes exposed to Beijing’s polluted air, face blood circulation problem that could affect their performance. Wong Chitming of the University of Hong Kong’s Department of Community Medicine remarked that athletes consume more air and this can end in cardiovascular problems. Particulates can get into the respiratory system and blood, creating an inflammatory response.
Pollution is becoming a major problem for athletes in Beijing. The International Olympic Committee in fact has said that it intends to reschedule endurance events to prevent possible health risks. Dr Wong Chitming divulged that polluted air results in blood viscosity going up, which in turn affects blood circulation and energy distribution. Muscles that need energy may not get it as a result and worst one can even land in a hospital.
