The drug is a combination pill, made up of anti-depression and smoking cessation drugs. Study results featuring the drug have shown an average of 8% weight loss in study participants, lofty numbers for sure.
The only real side effects associated with the drug were head ache, constipation and nausea. The drug manufacturers say that their drug actually exceeds FDA recommended guidelines for obesity drugs.
“This is the first drug, which I know of, that addressed the craving issue,” said Dr. Dennis Kim, senior vice president of medical affairs and communications at Orexigen Therapeutics Inc., one of the drug’s manufacturers.
“We have clearly cleared the hurdle, the efficacy benchmark, it’s of course the FDA’s judgment to see if it passes for safety,” Kim added.
