A day after claiming the Democratic nomination, Barack Obama’s comments in an address to the members of a pro-Israeli lobby has created a stir in both the US as well in the Middle East. Senator Barack Obama generated heat after remarking that Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel and it must retain undivided.
The statement has immensely angered the Arabs, with one Kuwaiti daily calling it a ‘slap in the face’. Now from the past twenty four hours, Obama supporters have been seeking to explain his initial remarks and suggest that an undivided Jerusalem will be hard to achieve. However instead of damage control the statement has led to further criticism from amongst the Jewish groups.
Republican presumptive nominee, John McCain has once gain found an opportunity to target the Illinois senator. Obama has consistently been criticized by McCain for being inexperienced and uninformed in foreign affairs and claims that Obama would jeopardize vital security interests of both the United States and its allies, including Israel. Senator Obama made the controversial comments, while speaking in Washington to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. The statement came as a shock to many Palestinian leaders who had hoped that Mr. Obama would break with what they saw as a pattern of American favoritism towards Israel.
