The Professor of Leeds University, Gary Williamson has listed out 20 functional foods which can lead to long and active lifestyle if consumed regular. The 20 foods recommended by Williamson include lots of vegetable and fruits. The list include apples, blackberries, black tea, blueberries, broccoli, cherries, cherry tomatoes, coffee, cereal bran, cranberries, dark chocolate, oranges peaches, plums, raspberries, red onion, spinach and strawberries. According to Professor Williamson, all these foods contain high amount of polyphenols. Consumption of polyphenols eliminates the risk of heart disease and increases longevity by retarding the ageing process.
The research also unearth the fact the chemicals polyphenols basically produced by plants act as antioxidants. These antioxidants are also capable of restricting fatal disease like cancer. Consumption of polyphenols though fruits and vegetables actually make the human body immune to various kinds of diseases, stated Williamson. Polyphenols increases the longevity by protecting cells from natural damage. Professor claimed that regular intake of the listed foods will reduce the risk of chronic diseases. However, the 20 listed foods can only keep a person active and agile throughout the life time, but may not avert premature death, said the research.
