According to a global study by Carbon Monitoring for Action (CARMA) NTPC in India is largest polluter. However, India is nowhere in terms of CO2 produced from USA at 2.8 billion ton. In the study CO2 emissions of 50,000 power plants worldwide have been compiled into a database, and India has 583 mn ton of CO2 emission. Factually, NTPC is the largest power generator in India.

In India, coal based power generation has been continued for quite long time and India’s NTPC has been counted as the largest polluter. Emmanuel D'Silva, a former World Bank environmental economist talking on the issue said that it is the opportune time for India's coal-based power companies to initiate emission reduction measures to face increased public pressure both at home and abroad.

Also, the study shows that these emissions cost society about $3.6 billion in damages caused to the environment. Power production is the major reason behind carbon emission and forms a significant portion as pollutant. There are apprehensions for if some action is taken to reduce carbon emission, power generation units have to undergo great pain.
