Show cause notices were served to 34 cinema halls including some multiplexes in Mumbai by the Maharashtra Government on Tuesday 29 April for failing to screen a set number of Marathi films. A Home Department official said that all these Mumbai movie theatres have not screened the necessary number of Marathi films in the past three years and were even handed letters underscoring the lapse on their part.
A hearing was convened in February where the explanations of the said movie hall management were heard. The show cause notices were served after the explanations given by them failed to appear satisfactory. The official said that the notices have consequently been served, querying them as to why their licenses should not be suspended for failure to abide by the norms on screening Marathi movies.
