Leading handset manufacturer, Nokia is likely to provide subscription-based music service at affordable rates. While informing about the new plan, country manager (GTM) Nokia, Vineet Taneja said that the new online music service from Nokia will be available for a few bucks for a year-long music subscription. The subscription-based music service will be introduced under Nokia's soon-to-be launched Ovi Stores.

Nokia's online application portal, Ovi enables the users to download applications like music, gaming, maps and other multimedia services. At the 2009 Mobile World Congress, Nokia announced that its online portal Ovi will be launched by this May. The company claimed that soon after its launch, about 50 million people will be to use the application.

Speaking more about music service plan, Vineet Taneja said that the proposed service will target mass-market hence the subscription rates will be considerably cheap. He however, said that gaming applications will be available at a premium pricing. The company also said to provide an email service which will come almost free of cost. Taneja clarified that if the users wish to have integrated messaging solutions and other communication software built along with email then minimum fee will be charged.

According to Taneja, Nokia aims to take the email solutions to non-metros therefore pricing will be very important to promote this service. Nokia’s S40 and S60 devices will support the download of Ovi application. Mentioning that the application will not be restricted to GPRS enabled phones; Taneja said that one can get Nokia Ovi services in the priority showrooms or service centres. He said that users can search for various online services and download them by paying at the retail outlets.
