Symbian, the company known for the Symbian software widely used in many (Nokia) smart phones is being acquired by Nokia. Towards this end, all available Symbian shares (52 per cent) have been lapped up by Nokia at a cost of EUR 3.647 per share. It is estimated that this should result in a buyout of something like EUR 264 million. Samsung may also get added on to this list. Nokia along with NTT DoCoMo, AT&T, LG, Motorola, STMicroelectronics, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Texas Instruments and Vodafone declared recently that the acquisition of Symbian is a crucial move towards the setting up of the Symbian Foundation. Symbian already happens to be amongst the most extensively-used platforms for mobile phones. It is during the first half of 2009 that the Foundation is expected to begin its operation, subject to closing of Nokia's acquisition of Symbian.
