World's leading handset manufacturer, Nokia has launched its take-back campaign in Chennai on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5. Under the new initiative, Nokia Inc will plant a sapling for every used mobile set deposited at recycling bins in its outlets. According to Nokia India (Corporate Affairs) Director Ambrish Bakaya, the old handsets are colleted from various recycle bins and sent to the Material Centre in Delhi. After that, the used mobile phones are transferred to London for recycling.
 
Ambrish Bakaya informed that about 80 percent of the used handset could be recycled including chargers and other accessories. Earlier this year, Nokia had launched a pilot study in Bangalore, Delhi, Gurgaon and Ludhiana that received massive response from the people. He informed that the company had collected a total of three tonnes of waste, including 10,000 handsets within the first 45 days of the launch.
 
The mobile manufacturer has introduced the take-back campaign in as many as 80 nations of the world as part of its environment saving initiative. Ambrish Bakaya informed that Nokia has tied-up with Chennai-based NGO Ahimsa and Rotary Bangalore Midtown to plant saplings in Kancheepuram district in Tamil Nadu and in Bangalore.

He also said that Nokia will plant about 12,000 saplings in four villages in Kancheepuram district and another 12,500 saplings in educational institutions in Bangalore. From next month onwards, the take-back campaign will be introduced in Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Raipur, Ludhiana and Delhi.
