Nokia India has launched a very unique campaign to encourage the cell phone users to dispose of their used handsets and accessories at recycling bins located at all Nokia priority dealers and Nokia care centres. Nokia India said that it will plant a sapling for every old mobile handset or accessory deposited with its dealers or customer. The global telecom giant has also assured to offer gifts to those who give away their old cell phones.
While talking to media, vice president and managing director, Nokia India, D. Shivakumar said that company has developed an elaborate recycling infrastructure with over 1,300 green recycling bins, installed at its centres across the country. The company is said to be working with qualified recyclers around the world to ensure proper end-of-life treatment of used devices. About 100 percent of the materials in an old phone can be reused. However, research shows that nearly 50 per cent of used phones are not returned or even passed on to another user.
As a result of which, Nokia has come up with this unique eco-friendly campaign. The campaign called Take Back was first executed in Finland in 2005. A Nokia consumer survey across 13 countries, including India, says people on average each user owned at least four-five handsets, but few were recycled. The users are also not aware of the fact that their old handset can be recycled. The Nokia campaign thus also focuses to make the people aware on the importance of recycling e-waste.
