Congress President, Sonia Gandhi has finally ended all speculations stating that Dr Manmohan Singh is doing an excellent job as the Prime Minister and is likely to be the Prime Ministerial candidate of the UPA government for the next general elections. Mrs. Sonia Gandhi strongly made her point clear on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 that Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is not going to be the party’s PM candidate as well as there is no room for sycophancy.
The comments were directed at HRD minister Arjun Singh, who on Monday had remarked that Rahul Gandhi would be an ideal choice for the post of Prime Minister. The party statement was that Congress President Sonia Gandhi and party general secretary Rahul Gandhi have always stayed away from all environment of sycophancy. External Affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee, however, came to the defense of the HRD minister, saying that the latter had said nothing wrong in projecting Rahul as a PM candidate as ultimately the leadership should pass on to the younger generation.
Jayanthi Natarajan, Congress spokesperson, while issuing the party statement, complimented Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his team for carrying out an excellent job. HRD minister Arjun Singh, after the party statement in the evening, defended himself saying that there is nothing wrong in what he has said about Rahul Gandhi. He further remarked that he has said nothing against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he is a member of the Cabinet and would continue to follow conventions associated with the post.
