Nick Faldo, one of the most successful British golfers, will receive knighthood as a part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours. Faldo, 51, has won six majors. The wins include three Open titles. He was the captain of the European Ryder Cup team, which lost to the American team last year.
He has 30 European Tour titles to his credit. He was the youngest player to qualify for the Ryder Cup at 20. He enjoyed 92 weeks as World No. 1 golfer. He gave up playing in 2006 and became a television golf analyst.
He said he was delighted and humbled when he heard the news of his knighthood. It was a surprise for him and his family and friends have reacted quite well. Sir Henry Cotton is the only other British golfer to have received this honour. The Queen’s list honours achievements from all walks of British life. The people could be from arts, industry, show business, etc.
Faldo was born in Welwyn Garden City in England. He won the British Youths Amateur Open Championship and England Amateur Championship in 1975. He turned professional the following year. He won his first PGA European title in 1977. He won all three of his matches on his Ryder Cup debut in 1977.
He won first of the three Open titles in 1987 at Muirfield. He won his second Open at St. Andrews in 1990, becoming the first international player to be named US PGA Player of the Year. In 1992, he claimed the Open title for the third time at Muirfield.
