From the night of September 5, 2008, the New Delhi Railway Station will don an abandoned look for the consecutive 10 days. Do not be taken aback to see the platform stalls closed, the normally crammed vehicle parking space empty and beggars missing from the premises from September 5 to September 14, 2008.
There also will not be any red-uniformed coolie around to transfer the passengers' luggage. One of the biggest exercises undertaken by the Indian Railways (IR), the ensuring 10 days will see the installation of a new automatic signalling system. Plus four new platforms will be added in order to up the operational level at the New Delhi Railway Station.
Route Relay Interlocking, the new signaling system, will automatically control the regular tasks of platform allocation, arrivals, departures and other use of infrastructure. The number of routes it will handle will be 1,278. In order to enable the new changes, the Northern Railways has terminated a number of trains to the New Delhi Railway Station during this duration.
