Netflix Inc, that offers DVD-by-mail service, started delivering movies straight off the internet to television sets through a new device, which boosted its stock by as much as 10.9%. This service was started by Netflix from Tuesday.
The device costs $99.99 and lets all the subscribers stream the movies online from the web directly into their television. Users can now watch their favorite movies or TV shows with no extra charges or any kind of restrictions on their viewing. According to a forrester analyst, James McQuivey with this move, the company has entered into a foray where it has literally entered the consumer's living room.
He further added that there are no winners and losers in this, but this technology will continue to boom through all of 2009 and may be into 2010 as well. It is crystal clear that millions and millions of users would prefer something of this sort over the coming years. The Roku player as it is called is the size of a paperpack and it all it requires is an internet connection. Amazingly it can also work with a wireless connection system through the Wi-Fi technology. It also gives the subscribers the opportunity to fast-foward or rewind the video streams with the help of a remote control that is provided with the device.
Because of this move by Netflix, its stock prices rose as high as $34.35. Users have now access to more than 10,000 movies and television episodes that are being made available through the Roku player. Netflix, earlier had also said that it was developing a set-top box in partnership with LG Electronics which would enable the subscribers to watch movies which will be shown directly to their TVs and will be streamed off the net.
