Owing to the growing power crisis in Nepal and alleged unfair state laws, the private television stations of the country declared emergency. According to Television Broadcasters Nepal which controls the TV stations of the country, all private stations will stop their operations from midnight to 5 a.m from January 8 onwards. The private stations were enraged at the decision of imposing a 16-hour daily power outage in the country. At present, the Nepal Electricity Authority has imposed a 12-hour daily blackout to cope with power scarcity.

The ongoing electricity crisis has badly affected the TV stations of Nepal which are reported to be losing huge amount of viewership and advertisement revenue. The association is also against the broadcasting regulations imposed during deposed king Gyanendra's government in 2005. Large scale protests have been made to lift the regulations on TV stations.

Recently the Nepal government has decided to import power from India to meet the energy requirements of the country. The Himalayan nation is facing energy crisis because of the low level of water in the major hydro power plants of the country. At present, the country is generating 240 MW power, which is 60 percent less than its current demand of 700 MW. The condition in Nepal is so bad that the government has decided to close down banks on Sundays.
