Newly elected constituent assembly in Nepal has decided to abolish Shah Dynasty with overwhelming majority. The 601 member assembly meeting was convened at Birendra International Convention Center. The motion was moved by Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitola on behalf of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala. The decisions like, celebration of Republic Day on 28th May every year, presidential system, the prime minister as executive head were also taken in the same meeting.
The motion was passed by 560 votes in favour against only four votes opposing the move. Now Nepal would be secular, federal, democratic republic nation and King Gyanendra will be reduced to a common citizen. According to the reports the king has been given 15 days to vacate the sprawling pink palace at the heart of Kathmandu which will now be turned into a national museum.
Current developments in Nepal have been observed world-wide. United States in its statement said that it is a forward looking development and there has been a political transition and after the elections government has been formed and moving forward. US statement says that they are continuously watching political development in the country.
