The Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has announced on October 11, 2008 to launch an alcohol control policy in India. The health minister was attending a seminar on alcohol control policy in Chennai. Dr Ramadoss in his speech said that consumption of alcohol is the root cause of all health problems. He took hard on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and appealed him to totally prohibit alcohol consumption in the state. Dr Ramadoss also appealed the other states to follow the same line.
 
Anbumani Ramdoss has also banned smoking in public places. Talking about the ban on smoking, the health minister said that he got a huge response from all over the country. He informed that soon a nation-wide campaign will be launched to make people aware of the ill effects of smoking. Meanwhile regarding the alcohol control policy the minister said that although nothing has been finalized, the guidelines of the policy will regulate things like number of alcohol shops, their working hours and the price of products.
