The Supreme Court in the case involving Javed Gulam Mohammed encounter on June 15, 2004, has issued notice to Gujarat CM Narendra Modi. The two judge bench comprising of Justices Tarun Chatterjee and Aftab Alam want response from Gujarat CM Modi in the so called fake encounter of Pranesh Kumar Pillai, who had converted to Islam and assumed the name Javed Gulam Mohammed.
The Gujarat government is already in controversy because of its many alleged fake encounters. Javed, according to police was encountered on June 15, 2004; was planning to assassin CM Modi. However, counsel for Javed has pleaded that Javed was killed in a fake encounter by Gujarat police. On the other hand police considers Javed worked as a shooter for Lashker-e-Taiba.
The same bench issued notice to Gujarat government in regard to a PIL (Public Interest Litigation) by lyricist Javed Akhtar and social activist Shabnam Hashmi. They both have alleged that there were many fake encounters in Gujarat in recent times. Both the petitioners have asked SC to order for a CBI enquiry into the killings taken by Gujarat police.
