UID chief Nandan Nilekani has urged India to come up with a ‘policy on privacy’ stressing that it is important because of increasing fear of people about disclosing personal details in public.
The issue of privacy came up when Nileknai was asked about data related to confidentiality of database of the proposed UID Authority, while addressing the civil society members working on NREGA.
When asked about the secrecy level of the personal details in the database, he mentioned that access to the UID database is restricted and verifications will be done by means of UID numbers, which will only be limited to confirming the genuineness of one's identity.
While mentioning that personal details over a large number of websites can be accessed by many people, he stressed the need of a privacy policy. "A policy to strike a balance between the RTI, which requires disclosure of information in public interest, and the privacy of an individual can be evolved," he said.
