The fateful event of Godhra carnage does not seem to be letting India breathe easy. Nanavati Commission, set up by Modi government to probe the burning of train and the riots that followed, has tabled part one of its report - that deals with the train burning incident. Igniting a fresh political controversy, the first part has given almost a clean chit to Narendra Modi. The conclusion derived by the Commission is that Godhra was a conspiracy hatched by the locals of Godhra, including Maulana Umarji, Razzak Kurkur and Salim Panwala.
Contradicting the finding of the UC Banerjee Committee, the report terms the burning incident as a “pre-planned conspiracy”, hatched to target kar sevaks and disturb communal peace and amity. Nanavati Report has upheld that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and his government had no role to play in Godhra. As per Justice Nanavati, there is no proof of the allegation that the Chief Minister or his council of ministers or even police officers were involved with the Godhra incident, in any way. If that wasn't enough, the report by Nanavati Commission also makes Narendra Modi and his team innocent of any role in the riots that followed Godhra carnage.
It says that there was no lapse on the part of the government or the police in providing safety, security and rehabilitation to riot victims. Hearing the finding of the Nanavati report, the Opposition walked out of the Gujarat Assembly. As per them, the report is merely a confirmation of their suspicion that Nanavati Commission is politically biased. Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi also said that the report seemed to be a verbatim translation of the findings of the special investigating team constituted by Narendra Modi on Godhra. Many believe the report to be forewarning of what is to come in the second part of the report, most probably the exoneration of Modi's government.
