National Aluminium Co Ltd (Nalco), which is the second largest producer of aluminium in India, declared on Wednesday 4 June that it is going to invest Rs 400 billion in various international and domestic expansion projects in the coming five years. The proposed Nalco projects include smelter and power projects in Indonesia, South Africa and Iran. Apart from this, Nalco is also planning brownfield and greenfield growth projects in India.
Earlier this year, this prominent aluminium producing country of India had inked a deal with Indonesia to build a 500,000-tonne smelter and a 1,250 mw captive power plant there. The company had made known that it plans to invest Rs 140 billion in this particular project. At the same time, Nalco is also looking forward to setting up a similar plant in South Africa as well where it will invest about Rs 160 billion. In Iran, a 310,000-tonne smelter has been planned.
As far as domestic projects are concerned, Nalco is planning a mines and refinery complex worth Rs 70 billion in Andhra Pradesh and is presently busy deliberating with the state government on this issue. In Orissa, the Nalco Company has planned a smelter and power complex in Jharsuguda district at an investment of Rs.85 billion. The company also has plans to create an aluminium park in Angul in a JV with Orissa Industrial Infrastructure Development Corp (IDCO).
