Rafael Nadal got his fourth consecutive Monte Carlo Masters win as well as his first title win of the season against arch rival Roger Federer. The second seeded Spaniard won 7-5, 7-5 on Sunday, April 27, 2008, defeating the top ranked Swiss in the clay court match. Nadal has won 98 of 99 matches played on clay court, with the sole loss happening at the hands of Roger Federer in the 2007 Hamburg final.
Nadal, who won his 24th title win of his career, remarked after the match that Roger and he always have good finals. On his fourth consecutive win at Monte Carlo, the Spaniard stated that winning four times here is unimaginable. Despite his straight set win, Nadal feels that Roger remains the best, the number one tennis player in the world. Federer however made 44 unforced error in the match and relied too much on his forehand shots, which cost him the title. Nadal remarked that he simply tried to put pressure on Roger’s backhand, whenever he had the chance.
