One of most famous shrines in Mumbai, the Haji Ali Dargah will be entirely reconstructed in the same Makrana marble that was used for the Taj Mahal. The demolition and reconstruction work of the holy shrine is scheduled to start after Eid on October 2, 2008. The Rs 100-million (over $ two million) project for Haji Ali Dargah is supposed to be completed within two years.
The holy shrine situated at south-central Mumbai's Worli bay has been deteriorating for several decades. According to the chairman and managing trustee of Haji Ali Dargah Abdul Sattar Merchant, several factors are responsible for the dilapidation of the parts of Dargah. The constant lashing of the waves, saline humidity and the increasing pressure of pilgrims coming to visit the shrine are among the key factors that have deteriorated the condition of the Dargah.
According to the new design, the entire shrine will be built using Makrana marbles. No concrete will used in the planned construction. As a result, the problem of corrosion will be solved permanently, claimed Abdul Sattar Merchant. The Structwell Designers and Consultants Pvt Ltd will reconstruct the Dargah without harming the sanctity of the holy shrine. The planned designs and constructions will surely transform Haji Ali Dargah into an even more popular tourist destination.
