Finally, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) has announced to launch its 3G mobile service in national capital. Interacting with the media, MTNL CMD R S P Sinha said that the company will launch its 3G services in Delhi within the next ten days. He also informed that MNTNL will kick-start its 3G operations in Mumbai by the first week of February. However, the telecom company has not tied up with any content provider.
As per Sinha, currently the IPTV provider of MTNL will supply content for Delhi and Mumbai 3G services. MTNL has about 15,000 IPTV subscribers in Delhi and Mumbai. In an earlier statement the company said that it planned to install 7,50,000 GSM lines each in Delhi and Mumbai. The third generation (3G) mobile services will enable the users to get high-speed data services, video streaming and better voice solutions.
Earlier both BSNL and MTNL had acquired the allotment of 3G spectrum from the government. In December 11, 2008, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh unveiled MTNL's 3G services in New Delhi. Communications and IT Minister A. Raja also made a video call to demonstrate the capabilities of 3G services.
