Scientists from the Montreal University of Canada claim that they have discovered the most massive star of our galaxy Milky Way. They say they have discovered a star that weighs 116 times that of sun. The researchers of Montreal University were partnered by an international team of astrophysicists in this project. Interestingly there is another massive star that they have found. Its mass is at least 89 times that of sun and this one also has been detected in Milky Way. The researchers involved in the discoveries include Olivier Schnurr, Jules Casoli and André-Nicolas Chené, Anthony Moffat and Nicole St-Louis.
According to reports, the two massive stars are located in Milky Way's massive star cluster NGC 3603. The two stars is said to have a binary system with a nearby lighter star. The name of this massive two-star binary system is A1. The researchers said that an instrument called SINFONI (spectrometer for infra-red faint field imaging) set in the very large telescope helped them gauge the weight of these stars. Apart from the observations made by the very large telescope installed at the European Organization for Astronomical Research centre in Chile, Hubble Space Telescope also helped the researchers to detect the stars.
