The Indian Meteorological Department has revealed that Monsoons might hit Kerala on May 29. The south-west monsoon is likely to hit the Kerala coast on the said date, 3 days prior to the scheduled date of June 1. A convection developing in the Arabian Sea may cause a strong south equatorial current to push the Monsoons to the Kerala coast at an earlier date.
The Met department revealed that with the South West Monsoon moving almost eight days in advance over Bay of Bengal and the surrounding regions, the Monsoons in Kerala are ready for an early onset. For the first time the Indian Meteorological Department has applied six predictors to prepare the forecast for the 2008 Monsoon onset over Kerala.
India’s 235 million farmers rely on the timing of the June-September Monsoon season to decide which crops to grow. Last year the Met department had predicted the onset of Monsoon in Kerala on May 24 and the actual onset took place four days later on May 29. This year too the Met department has declared the Monsoon date for Kerala as May 29 but with an error margin of four days.
