City giants Mohun Bagan lost their I-league opener to Chirag United by 2-3.A reckless tackle by Bagan sideback Sur Kumar Singh also cost his team as he was shown the red card towards the end of the first half at the Salt Lake stadium. This resulted in reducing the former champions to ten men team for the rest of the outing.
The goals for Chirag came from Brazilian Josimaar Da Silva and Edmilson Marques, while Brazilians Marcos Pereira and Rakesh Masih found the target for the losers, who continued their tradition of beginning their I-League fixtures on a wrong note.
Bagan's attacking prowess was weakened from the start as Brazilian Jose Ramirez Barreto had to sit out as he was not fully fit. The team again fell one man short as Sur Kumar lost his cool after a Gouranga Biswas charge which earned him marching orders from referee Pratap Singh in the 42nd minute.
Mohun Bagan managed to take the lead in the 16th minute as a weak shot from Marcos went into the net off Sandeep Nandy's gloves.
Chirag scored the equalizer in the 32nd minute through a penalty .In the second half; Chirag controlled the proceedings by utilising their numerical superiority.They took the lead in the 66th minute. However, Bagan played well and succeeded in making the scoreline 3-2.
