Mohun Bagan defeated I-League champions Churchill Brothers by 2-1 in the one-off Super Cup tie at the Devilal Sports Complex in Gurgaon on Sunday (26th April) and won their third trophy of the season. A late strike from Jose Ramires Barreto guided Mohun Bagan to the victory. With this win Mohun Bagan pocketed the Rs.1 million prize money kept for the winner.
Federation Cup winners Mohun Bagan took the lead in the 21st minute through N.S. Manju’s header. But an own goal from Dipak Mondal in the 45th minute neutralized the advantage. It was Brazilian striker Barreto, who scored the winning goal for the Kolkata team in the 88th minute.
Earlier, in their last two matches Mohun Bagan has lost to Mahindra United in I-League and to Kuwait SC in AFC Cup. So in this match nothing less than a win could have been apt for Mohun Bagan to cap off the season. Mohun Bagan coach Karim Bencherifa said that that it was a great way to end the season by beating a champion team like Churchill.
