Mohammed Bin Hammam has won the election for Asian Football Confederation (AFC) FIFA Executive Council member. The AFC chief, Bin Hammam regained his FIFA executive committee seat by defeating the President of Bahrain Football Association, Sheikh Salman Bin Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa. All 46 members of the AFC participated in the election but only 44 votes were counted while two were declared void. Out of the total valid votes, Bin Hammam won 23 while Al-Khalifa claimed 21.
After retaining the FIFA executive committee seat, Mohammed Bin Hammam said that he is extremely elated to win such a close election. The victory came at his 60th birthday. He conveyed his gratitude to those who supported him in the election. Bin Hammam will hold the post for the next four years. He promised to work for the development of soccer in Asia.
Asian Football Confederation or AFC is one of FIFA's six continental confederations. Founded in 1954, AFC is the governing body of football in Asia excluding Cyprus and Israel. The soccer tournaments organised by AFC includes Asia Cup, Asian World Cup Qualifying Tournament, AFC Challenge Cup and Olympics Qualifying Tournament.
