A moderate quake of 5.6-magnitude rattled Sumatra Island in Indonesia on the morning of Tuesday, September 9, 2008. Geologists said that there was no report of immediate damage. As per the Indonesian meteorology and geophysics agency, the earthquake took place at around 10:07 am, about 31 miles to the southwest of Tebing Tinggi in Bengkulu province.
Agency geologist Ali Imran said, 'There is no report of damage so far but the quake was felt in Kepahiang and Bengkulu town.' The United States Geological Survey, on the other hand, said it had measured the Sumatra Island quake to be of 5.4-magnitude. The agency informed that another quake of a similar magnitude occurred in the northeast of Pagai Utara Island in West Sumatra province the day before.
