The telecom regulator of India has issued guidelines related to the mobile number portability which will now enable the subscribers for changing the operators without changing the numbers within a particular circle.

According to a statement issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the mobile number portability will be effective in the metros from Dec 31 whereas rest of India will be able to enjoy this facility from March 20, 2010.

This will enable the subscribers to move across service providers without changing their numbers. The mobile technology also does not hinder the shifting of the providers. (for example from Reliance CDMA to Airtel GSM)l

This also enables the subscribers to switch the mobile technology used within the same service provider, such as Reliance CDMA to Reliance GSM, in a licensed service area.

A subscriber needs to wait for a minimum of 90 days from the date of activation of a mobile connection for changing the service provider.

If a number has been ported once, it can only be ported again after 90 days from the date of the previous porting.
