The state of Mizoram got the taste of a fashion show for the first time when Lakme designer week was inaugurated at the state's capital Aizwal on December 11, 2008. The fashion show was organised in collaboration with various state government departments and NGOs to promote the fashion industry in the northeastern state. An array of clothes designed by the budding designers has been displayed by the models who walked up ramp at the fashion show.

 

The designs displayed at the show were mostly a fusion of western and traditional Mizo designs. The oraganisation of a fashion show in Mizoram provided a platform for the budding local designers to showcase their talents and win an entry into the fashion world. Interacting with the media, the organiser of the event, Ruth L. Rhangchel stated that the main motive behind organizing such a show was to promote the talents of the youth of the state.

 

According to him, the fashion show will help the world to know the creativity and sense of fashion that prevail among the Mizo people.  The people of northeastern states of India are well known for their fashion sense and colourful ethnic dressing style. With the passage of time, the youth of these states are becoming more fashion conscious. The fashion show has not only opened a new window to the youth in the state but also given them an opportunity to display their fashion talents to the world.
