The pension for ‘outstanding sportsperson’ as well as for those who are living in poverty-stricken conditions has been increased by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons is overseen by the General Committee. When it met to take a decision recently under the Chairmanship of Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. M.S. Gill, the General Committee pointed out that it was in 1994 that the last revision was made.

It was finalized by the general Committee that it will increase the income limit from all sources for being eligible for assistance from the fund from Rs. 3,000 each month to Rs 2 lakh each year. Even the definition for ‘outstanding sportsperson’ was revised. The new definition now includes those who have secured any of the top three ranks in individual events or two top in team event in a recognized national sports event. The new definition also includes those who represents or has represented India in any international sports event at least two times.

It was decided that the present limit of Rs one lakh for the family of the sportsperson incase he or she met with an acute injury during training or participation in an international event will be increased to Rs five lakh. The existing limit of Rs 40,000 for any other type of injury has been hiked to Rs two lakh. On the other hand, the monthly pension given to ‘outstanding sportsperson who is permanently incapacitated’ has been increased to Rs 2,500 to Rs 10,000. Monthly pension in other cases has been enhanced from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 8,000.
