One of India's most well-known Muslim leaders and president of Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi died on Monday, September 29, 2008. His death has brought an end to a very crucial chapter of Hyderabad's political history. Owaisi was 76 years old and had been suffering from a protracted illness.

It was on September 13 that Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi was admitted into a private hospital due to breathing problems and had been on a ventilator ever since. He dominated Muslim politics in Hyderabad for almost four decades and is now survived by his wife, daughter and three sons.

Asaduddin Owaisi, who is Hyderabad MP, informed that his father breathed his last at around 9.30 pm at their Hyderguda home. The Muslim leader passed away a few hours after he was shifted home from the hospital. On Tuesday, his body will be kept at the MIM headquarters so that people can pay their last respects. The burial will take place at the Dargah Hazrat Mohammed Hasan graveyard.
