The Milky Way galaxy for decades has been pictured as having four spiral arms. The latest images however reveal that the Milky Way just has two of its spiral arms now. Robert Benjamin of the University of Wisconsin revealed that the Scientists are not proposing a change in the position of the arms instead they are suggesting a change in the emphasis of the arms. Benjamin presented the results of his team recently at the American Astronomical Society (AAS).
There are other findings and studies about the evolving picture of our galactic home base. Thomas Dame of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in complete contrast has suggested a completely new arm of stars wrapped around one side of the galactic centre. Now, the new infrared images of the Milky Way show just two major spiral arms, Scutum-Centaus and Perseus, along with a newly discovered arm called Far 3Kpc Arm.
