Tamil Nadu government has decided to increase the price of milk with effect from Sep 1.

The procurement of buffalo milk has become dearer by Rs. 5 per litre for the government where as it has to pay Rs. 2 more for a litre of cow’s milk. So the government has decided to hike the price of milk by Rs. 2 per litre for those who are Aavin card holders where as those do not have the card will have to pay Rs. 2.50 extra for a litre.

The announcement on the hike of milk prices was made by Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami and U. Mathivanan, minister for dairy development, after a meeting with the milk producers in the state secretariat.

The government had plans for hiking the milk prices, but was just waiting for the results of the by-polls. Now that all the five seats have gone to DMK, they have decided to implement the plan.

After state milk cooperative Aavin, the private dairies are also expected to increase milk prices as they pay slightly higher prices.

Now that the price of milk has gone up, very soon the hotels and tea shops will increase the cost of coffee, tea as well as milk sweets.
