A new study related to migraine has proved that women are more subjected to the development of this type of headache than men.

Migraines happen in a person when the blood vessels present in his or her brain constricts which lead to the development of recurring and intense vascular headaches.

Researchers have found out that three out of 4 persons who suffer from migraine are women. They have also cited that the major cause for this headache may be hormones.

The Department of Health and Human Services of US have quoted that 50% of the migraines experienced by a woman will be before, during or after her period of menstruation. But there are cases where a woman may experience this headache entirely through her menstrual cycle, but the major reason that has been quoted is menstruation.

The levels of progesterone and oestrogen go down sharply just before the menstrual cycle of a woman begins. This drop in the level of hormones can lead to the development of migraine in women. This is because oestrogen has the ability of controlling the chemicals present in the brain which affect the sensation of pain in women.

Richard Pearl, MD, who is a clinical neurologist in Suffolk County, New York has quoted that genetics as well as environment also play a major role in migraine, similar to other neurological diseases.  But he also added that oestrogen is the major factor.
