A MIG-21 aircraft caught fire at the Bagdogra Airport in Darjeeling on Friday, May 23, 2008. The aircraft caught fire while landing at the airport at around 9.30 am. The pilot is fortunately safe. MK Dey, Group Captain of Indian Airforce, Bagdogra revealed that the aircraft caught fire while returning from a routine sortie early on Friday morning.
Mr. Dey revealed that though the aircraft is completely damaged, the pilot was safe. Three fire tenders struggled for about half an hour to extinguish the blaze. KK Dey, Airport Director has revealed that the traffic was not affected at the airport after the incident. A court of inquiry has however been set to find out, how the MIG-21 caught fire.
