The winning of a phenomenal eight gold medals at the ongoing Beijing Olympic Games by 23-year-old American swimmer Michael Phelps has brought him praise, adulation in tow with endorsement offers worth approximately 100 million dollars. At least, that is the figure which his agent Peter Carlisle recently quoted while speaking to the Wall Street Journal.

The great American swimmer, who has won a total of 14 Olympic medals, presently will rake in around three million to five million dollars. This is a substantial amount for an athlete in a niche sport that’s only shown on mainstream US television during the Olympics. As Phelps went on his medal accumulation mission during this year’s Beijing Olympics, calls for brand endorsements began pouring on the phone of Peter Carlisle.

He said there were over 50 business proposals a day coming in over the weekend. The brands for which Michael Phelps already holds contracts include swimwear firm Speedo, Hilton Hotels and watchmaker Omega. The media, however, was heard predicting that the new-found superstardom may fetch him even larger deals than anticipated. There are talks Nike alone may try to rope him in for $40 million if Phelps agrees to terminate his contract with Speedo.
