Fans of late pop legend Michael Jackson are campaigning to have his name restored to a Los Angeles school auditorium after his moniker was covered up ahead of his infamous child molestation trial.

Jackson donated money to Gardner Street Elementary School in 1989 and was a special guest at the naming ceremony.

But education officials decided to cover up Jackson's name in 2003, following comments from concerned parents, after the singer was arrested and investigated for child molestation allegations. The Thriller hitmaker was acquitted on 14 charges of child molestation in June 2005 -a year-and-a-half after he was accused.

Now loyal fans want the school to proudly display its official name, citing Jackson's acquittal, and they have started a petition on social networking website Facebook.com to have his name restored.

Organisers of Uncover Michael Jackson's Name (The Gardner St. School Issue Campaign) are asking fans to download and sign a letter to send to the school district superintendent.

Over 2,100 users had joined the movement by Thursday afternoon.

Jackson died on 25 June 2009 after suffering a cardiac arrest.
