Michael Clarke will not play for New South Wales in the inaugural Champions League Twenty20 cricket tournament. The tournament will be played in India from next month.

Clarke made announcement of his withdrawal a day after the Australia skipper Ricky Ponting declared his retirement from Twenty20 international.

New South Wales and Victoria will be Australia’s representative in the champions League. The 12 teams who will be defending for the championship include top provincial teams from South Africa, New Zealand, England, Srilanka, West Indies and Australia.

The terror attacks on Mumbai had forced the cancellation of first Champions League last December.

Clarke had also missed the first season of the Indian Premier League T20 competition due to international workload.

Australia will play a seven-match ODI series in England this month. They will next play for the Champions Trophy limited-overs tournament in South Africa. A limited-overs series in India is also scheduled for the team before its domestic summer in November, featuring Test series against Pakistan and the West Indies.

The New South Wales team at the Champions League will be led by opener Simon Katich.
