The directorate general of shipping (DGS) has revealed that a merchant navy officer was killed in a fire that broke out aboard the Indian ship, M.V Oel Aishwarya, near the Sri Lankan coast. The person who was killed during the early morning Saturday firing was the ship’s Second Officer Babu Thomas. The ship is expected to reach the Chennai port around 10.pm on Sunday.  
 
The fire broke out on the ship around 5 am Saturday morning and could be controlled nearly after seven hours. The DGS has ordered an enquiry into the incident and the loss of life, according to a statement issued late on Saturday night. The enquiry is going to be conducted by the principal officer of mercantile marine department and the shipping master, Chennai. The Indian ship M.V. Oel Aishwarya was on a schedule voyage from Colombo to Chennai.
