UPA Government is all set to create history. It has nominated Meira Kumar, who was earlier given the Water Resources Ministry, as its candidate for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. With this, Kumar has become the first woman to be so nominated. Kumar confirmed the news in front of the media on Monday, 1st June 2009. She accepted that she has resigned from the post of the Union Water Resources Minister and been nominated for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker by UPA Government.

Meira Kumar was also heard thanking Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA allies for nominating her, the 'first woman', for the office of the Lok Sabha Speaker. When questioned further, she declined to comment, saying that she will talk only after June 3, when the election for the Speaker is scheduled to take place. Her resignation, coming only two days after she took charge as Water Resources Minister, was sent to Pratibha Patil for approval and has been accepted as well.
