The general secretary of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), Vaiko has been taken into custody for openly supporting the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Vaiko has made provocative statement in a public meeting in Chennai and supported the extremist group of Sri Lanka. He said that injustice done to the Lankan Tamil forces him to support an armed struggle to rescue them.
 
Report says that police have arrested the MDMK general secretary from his Anna Nagar residence. He was arrested by the 'Q' branch police of Tamil Nadu which generally deal with extremists and terrorist outfits. Vaiko is likely to be put under judicial custody till November 6. The MDMK presidium chairman and former Union Minister, M. Kannappan, was also arrested on the same charges.
 
According to the director general of police, the speeches of Vaiko and Kannappan could affect the nation’s unity, integrity and security. That is why both them have been arrested and would prosecuted under law. However, the arrested general secretary said that he does not support violence but he stood by what he had stated at the meeting. Mr Vaiko is believed to a staunch supporter of LTTE.
