Blaming center government for double standard on anti-terror law, UP CM Mayawati has thrown away UPCOCA (Uttar Pradesh Control of Organized Crime Act). She showed her annoyance at Congress government, over the non-clearance of the bill which was passed by the state legislature on February 13, this year. She said that she has dumped the UPCOCA bill in dustbin with immediate effect.
Her decision came after the official announcement of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Sriprakash Jaiswal that the Centre would turn down the UP government’s request to pass the UPCOCA bill. The bill was waiting for President's approval. Interestingly, several other states like Rajasthan, MP, and Andhra Pradesh anti-terror laws too are waiting for the President’s approval.
She said that the Uttar Pradesh act had been prepared on the lines of a similar law in Congress-ruled Maharashtra, but the party had not done away with the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in the western state. Mentionably, the Supreme Court too recognizes some controversial sections of the MCOCA, under which state police is allowed to tap oral or electronic communication.
