The Delhi-bound 2779 Goa Sampark Kranti Express crushed the 2964 Mewar Express, which had been halted on the Mathura-Vrindavan route on Wednesday morning, leaving 22 dead. The initial reports state that about 25 have been injured. It is feared that more injured are trapped inside the wreckage.
As rescue and relief operations continued at the site of the mishap, officials said that the number of fatalities could go up. The injured were being rushed to local hospitals.
"It is a rear-end collision. The Mewar Express had stopped because of the alarm chain having being pulled. The Goa Express, which was running six minutes behind on the same track, rammed into the stationary Mewar Express from behind. The driver of the Goa Express probably overshot the signal but the actual facts would only be ascertained following a detailed inquiry," Northern Railways' General Manager Vivek Sahai said.
