The R&D facility of India’s largest passenger car producer, Maruti Suzuki, which is being set up in Haryana, has been allocated about 700 acres by the state government of Haryana.

According to the spokesperson for Maruti, it has plans for making an investment of about Rs.1,000 crore over a period of 6 years in two phases.

According to Maruti, the development of the land which has been allocated for the purpose along with the development of the tracks that will be used for testing has been planned for completion during the first phase by 2012 whereas the R&D facilities will be completed only by 2015.

The deal for this has been inked by the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corp managing director Rajeev Arora and Maruti Suzuki managing director and chief executive Shinzo Nakanishi.

According to the company, the R&D facility is the only centre which is being developed by the Suzuki Motor Corp outside Japan. It also added that the company will be introducing "world-class R&D facilities in India".

"Six years ago, Osamu Suzuki, chairman, Suzuki Motor, Japan, had promised the people of India that he will make Maruti Suzuki the R&D hub for Asia, outside Japan. Today, we have taken a step further in realising this promise," said Nakanishi in a statement.

"This facility in Rohtak would be a big step forward in building the R&D capability of Maruti Suzuki, and enable us to offer superior products to our customers in the future as well."

The R&D facility will be confirming to international norms and will include a state-of-the-art test track for the passenger cars. This test track will house proving ground, wind tunnel and crash facility.

Suzuki has plans for making India as the global manufacturer of A-Star.

Maruti Suzuki has also plans to design a car on its own as well as to launch a made-in-India car by 2012.
