Considering the customer's overwhelming response for its diesel version cars like DZire and Swift, India's largest passenger car maker Maruti Suzuki is reportedly planning to launch a diesel variant of SX4. The new SX4 diesel would be about Rs. 40,000-50,000 pricier than the petrol variant. It has been learnt from close sources that a 1.6 liter turbodiesel for 'SX4 diesel' may be sourced from the company’s parent arm. The company has already a diesel-driven SX4 in its portfolio in various countries.

Being India’s largest passenger car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki senses that diesel variant of cars are gaining popularity in the Indian market. It is so because such cars offer improved power, performance, and fuel-efficiency. According to market sources the diesel version of SX4 would be available in the Indian showrooms by mid-2010. Once launched 'SX4 diesel' would be pitted against Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Verna, Fiat Linea and Honda’s proposed diesel version of City.

According to a senior representative of Maruti Suzuki, the company has lined up an array of launches with diesel engines including Ritz and a couple of other models. The representative also stated that such cars are becoming very popular as they are more fuel-efficient and cheaper to run.
