Tennis champion Maria Sharapova withdrew from the WTA Rogers Open in Montreal because of a shoulder injury. There is a likelihood now that this injury may put her participation in the Beijing Olympics as well as the US Open in jeopardy.

Sharapova, who braved excruciating pain during the second round to triumph 7-5 5-7 6-2 over Marta Domachowska of Poland, will undergo a MRI Scan on Thursday. The 21 year old World number three stated that whether or not she will participate in the Olympics or US open depends crucially on the test results.

Confirming her withdrawal from the WTA Rogers Open, a dejected Maria Sharapova said that the occurrence as really ‘unfortunate’. Elsewhere, top seed Ana Ivanovic stuttered to a win over Petra Kvitova. Playing with a swollen thumb, world number one Ivanovic advanced to the third round with a 6-3 4-6 6-3 win over Czech 18-year-old Kvitova.
