The Congress-NCP government in Maharashtra has left behind even the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and the Shiv Sena as far as the controversial issue of ‘sons of the soil’ is concerned. It has now been ordered by the Maharashtra government that the nameplates of all commercial units in the state have to be in Marathi. A notification was issued by the state government on May 31 which underscored that the nameplates of all shops, establishments, commercial organizations, hotels, theatres and restaurants have to be in Marathi.

The official notification informed that it has been made compulsory to write nameplates in Marathi and Devnagari as per provisions of the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act 1961. The notification also underscored that despite giving prior directives to the concerned to write nameplates in Marathi, they are continuing to write the same in other languages. It was infact warned by the government during the budget session of the legislature that strict action will be taken against those found flouting this order.
